Planning Your Electrical Setup – What to Know and What Liven Has Already Taken Care Of?

When planning a home, it is important to carefully consider the placement of sockets, switches, and lighting. Your home, your rules – when planning sockets, base your decisions on your family’s needs and habits.

Think about:

  • Which sockets in your current home are conveniently located?
  • Which sockets are missing?
  • What new devices or activities do you plan for your new home?
  • Who can you ask for advice? Do any of your acquaintances have particularly good solutions at home?

Where does the dust come from and where should the vacuum go?

If you have previously used a corded vacuum cleaner, sockets in the hallway and near each room entrance have likely made sense. But perhaps in your new home you are planning to use a robot and/or cordless vacuum cleaner? In that case, you will need sockets in different locations than before.

A robot vacuum should be placed in an accessible yet hidden spot.

Examples of how homebuyers have planned this:

  • Under the TV cabinet → may be visible when watching TV
  • Under a higher sofa → may be difficult to access
  • Under a hallway cabinet → requires suitable cabinet design
  • In a utility room → if the door is often closed, the robot cannot move freely
  • Under a kitchen or other cabinet

There are many possible solutions and the optimal location depends on your home layout. A handheld vacuum cleaner could be mounted on the wall, for example in a utility room or behind a cabinet corner.

Sockets in the kitchen – for more convenient cooking

Depending on your kitchen layout, it is important to plan socket placement accordingly. If you use a coffee machine, toaster and kettle on the countertop, it is advisable to plan a triple socket instead of a double one.

For built-in appliances, sockets can be placed in less accessible locations, but keep in mind that you will also need sockets for devices you use occasionally, which should be easily accessible above the countertop.

It is also a good idea to include sockets in the kitchen island. If the island is positioned against a wall on one side, wall-mounted sockets can be a more cost-effective and practical solution, as they do not require additional integration into the island surface.

Socket placement by the bed

Sockets next to the bed should be planned together with bedside tables to ensure they remain accessible and are not hidden behind furniture. It is also possible to place sockets above the bedside table, but keep in mind that chargers will always be visible and placing items like a glass of water may become less convenient.

Sockets can also be integrated inside the bedside table.

BUT! If you prefer to keep smart devices away from your bed, place sockets slightly further away to support this intention. This applies to both adult and children’s bedrooms.

Electricity in wet areas

Sockets are also necessary in bathrooms and utility rooms. Read more about how to make the right choices, as planning in these areas must take into account specific technical requirements and solutions.
